First 5 Amador considers health inclusive of all aspects of physical, mental and oral health, physical activity and nutrition. We have an overarching goal to enhance and increase the health opportunities to families with children 0-5 by increasing awareness of services to families and how to access those services; and by increasing the utilitzation of health services such as immunizations. A preventative and holistic approach to health is a major focus of First 5's initiatives. For example, one approach has been to incorporate nutrition and physical activity promotion into all of First 5's funding areas. Any First 5 grant supplying a snack or cooking program, must incorporate nutritious food (with an emphasis on fruits & vegetables). Individuals providing programs such as reading and music have included material that reinforces the health, nutrition and fitness message.
Health promotion starts before birth. First 5 has partnered with the Amador County Public Health Department to deliver the "Baby Welcome Wagon". This home visiting program delivers First 5 California Parent Kits, which have been customized to include local resources. The home visitors are well versed in resources including health insurance, nutrition, immunizations, child safety, local activities, etc. First 5 has also helped spear-head a local "Oral Health Task Force" whose goal is to provide education, screenings, varnishings, treatment and dental homes to children 0-5 in Amador County. Free screenings and fluoride varnishings are offered throughout the County. Amador-Calaveras Connecting HANDs, Health, Activity, Nutrition Directions is another health oriented project that First 5 is heavily involved in. The two-county program is currently focusing on issues related to food security, given our current economic state.
